Some people use the news paper as the substrate because it is easy to maintain and clean however it does not look like the natural habitat.  One of the best materials to be used is the ceramic tile because it can be cleaned and provide effective heating to the users. Bearded Dragons are very heat sensitive pets so It is important that you choose the right type of vivarium for a bearded dragon. The first thing you should consider is the size of your beardie. After all the size does matter and initially 20 gallons would suffice for a baby bearded dragon.

However, once your beardie dragon reaches adult size, 60 gallon is more ideal. Vivariums are made out of glass doors and wooden material.  The wooden material from the vivarium can be cleaned easily and are able to withstand rough usage.  This makes wooden vivariums a better choice over glass only aquariums which prove difficult when controlling the temperature for your beardie’s habitat.

Another thing to remember when buying a Vivarium for a bearded dragon is to not buy the ones which have the wire mesh because it allows the heat to escape. A  heat emitting bulb should be utilized to get the best results because it raises the temperature to about 100 F.

The Bearded Dragon – Which one?

The first thing you should know is that there are various types of bearded dragons. The more knowledge you gain about the various varieties, the better-equipped you will be when making the decision to buy a beardie.

Eastern Bearded Dragon - Pogona Barbata

To start with, there is the Eastern Bearded Dragon which is also known as Pogona Barbata. This was the first species of

bearded dragons identified by zoologist. The Pogona are found in eastern and south-eastern Australia. However, the Pogona Barbata can also be found in places where the climate is much different E.G: In parts of the world where there are wet coastal forests.

Because the Pogona Barbata beardie can grow up to about 2 feet in length it is considered to be the largest and and heaviest bearded dragon. Buying a Pogona Barbata can be difficult since you have to go to a special breeder to do so.

Small-Scaled or Drysdale - Pogona Microlepidota

The Small-Scaled or Drysdale, also known as the Pogona Microlepidota is another breed of a bearded dragon. They are usually found in the Drysdale River National Park in the northern part of Western Australia.

Western bearded dragon - Pogona Minimus

It is the Inland or Central Bearded Dragon. This is the most common type of beardie. It can be found in non-coastal regions of the eastern states in Australia. The Central Bearded Dragon grows much larger than 2 feet and as such needs a big habitat.

Bearded dragons like humans, are omnivorous creatures which means they eat both meat (insects) and vegetables. Full grown bearded dragons will also devour pinky mice and baby lizards.

When considering a diet for your bearded dragon it is important you give them a varied diet. However, they tend to do better on diet where vegetables are the primary variance.

Bearded Dragon care – Vegetables

When you feed your bearded dragon vegetables, it is essential you give it to them chopped up. The smaller the bearded dragon is, the finer the vegetable should be chopped up.

Raw shredded carrots, collard greens, dandelion greens, mustard greens, kale, frozen vegetables (like carrots),  peas, and beans are a good mix of vegetables for these products.

Green leaf and Romanian lettuce are also favourites of the bearded dragon. However, you should feed these sparingly to your bearded dragon since they don’t hold much nutritional value.

Bearded Dragon care – Insects

Common insects you can feed your bearded dragon are crickets, meal worms, super worms, and wax worms. For proper bearded dragon care insects you feed your bearded dragon should be gut-loaded.

Gut-loaded means to feed the insects a nutritious meal prior feeding them to your bearded dragon. By doing this all the nutrients are essentially passed onto your beardie.

The two supplements which your bearded dragon will need for proper bearded dragon care is calcium and vitamin D3 supplement. About The Bearded Dragon…

The Bearded Dragon is a one – of – a kind animal.  It is a unique creature which will become a pet that is truly unforgettable. This reptile is native to Australia and is commonly referred to as the “beardie”.  The beardie being a ‘reptile’ is completely hairless.

Now why is it called “bearded”..? Well it’s because of the filament covered scales on its throat patch which actually resembles a beard.

When the beardie feels as though it is in danger, he contracts his muscles to make his filaments stand up and thus make his head appear bigger than what it normally is.

However, this is about as confrontational as the beardie will get.  This lizard is known to be naturally tame and has a non-aggressive personality which means the beardie is a pet that is safe for all ages. The beardie on average grows to about two feet in length which means he doesn’t need a large habitat. The beardie is also a relatively easy pet to feed since it eats both vegetables and insects.

Nevertheless, the are certain things a beardie owner should be aware of when keeping a bearded dragon as a pet.
